MAT ABACUS Business School limited is a private company incorporated in Uganda. It is an institution that was formed in 2019 as a result of a merger between the Management and Accountancy Training Company limited (MAT) incorporated in 1999 and Abacus Business School (ABS) incorporated in 2015. Both institutions had established niches in Business education and were led by individuals synonymous with tertiary business education in the academic and professional spheres.
MAT ABACUS Business School is headed by the Country Team Leader, and CEO, Prof. Samuel Sejjaaka a Ugandan national and leading academic, professional accountant, auditor and Board Director with a wealth of experience spanning over 30 years.
Prof. Sejjaaka founded Abacus Business School in 2015 and earlier, between 1991 and 2014, he had lectured at Uganda’s oldest tertiary institution, Makerere University (later the Makerere University Business School) rising to the position of Deputy Principal.
The Management and Accountancy Training Company (MAT) was founded by Mr. Suresh Tanna a UK citizen and professional accountant with over 50 years’ experience providing professional accountancy training in the UK and Uganda. Mr. Tanna was one of the founders of Emile Woolf College, which during the 1990’s, was the leading provider of ACCA tuition in the UK and was part of EW FACT Plc. a company listed on the UK stock exchange. He returned to Uganda in 1999 to set up the Management and Accountancy training Company Ltd (MAT) which was instrumental in transforming the professional accountancy landscape in Uganda.
With less than 200 professional accountants in Uganda in the late 1990’s, the entrance of MAT transformed the profession. Over the next 20 years, lecturers from the UK, Malaysia, Singapore and Uganda changed the narrative contributing to the development of accountancy and management skills in Uganda, training thousands of accountants many of who now are in CEO and Executive Leadership positions in public practice, industry, commerce, NGO’s and the public sector. MAT was also retained by the College of Business Studies in Rwanda between 2008 and 2012 to provide lecturing support for its training on ACCA courses. Lecturers from UK, Uganda and Malaysia were part of this team.
